This article provides instructions on how to set file association to open the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.zip file properly. Files of type ".zip" should be opened by the Archive Utility Application. It is possible for this type of file to become associated with another application, causing them to unzip incorrectly. Consequently, users cannot launch web conferencing sessions successfully using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.

Affected Platforms

Mac OS X 10.8.4 or later

Solution

To set file association to open the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.zip file properly, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Finder and then Click the Go link at the top of the screen.
  2. Select the Go to Folder.. option.
  3. Type or copy the following text in the Go to Folder window and then click the Go button (refer to image 1).

/System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app

  1. You should now have the CoreServices folder opened and the Archive Utility.app highlighted as shown in image 2 below.

  1. While you have the CoreServices folder open, Locate the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.zip file in a different Finder window.

      Note: Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.zip is normally found in your Downloads folder.

  1.  Right-Click on the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.zip and select Get info from the drop-down menu.

       Note: If you don’t have right-click configured on your Mac, you can hold down the Control key to mimic an alternate click.

  2. Click the Open With drop-down and then click the current application that is set to open the file (refer to image 3).

  1. Select Other from the drop-down menu to open the Choose Application window.
  2. From the CoreServices folder, click and drag Archive Utility.app into the Choose Application window.
  3. Check the box next to the Always Open With option at the bottom of the Choose Application window.
  4. Click the Open button.
  5. Click the Change All.. button to ensuring all future ".zip" files open the same way (refer to image 4).
