Java and Blackboard Collaborate Launcher
Issue Description:
This article helps resolve issues launching Collaborate Original sessions when the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher is installed, but unavailable through the Control Panel.

When clicking on a Collaborate Original meeting.collab file, the user sees an error that says there is no program associated with the file. When trying to go through the control panel to associate the launcher, the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher cannot be found even though the launcher is installed.

Affected Platforms

Solution 1:

In this solution you will make an admin installation of the Launcher and install it in Program Files instead of the User Profile folder.

First, uninstall the current Blackboard Collaborate Launcher version.

Then download and install the following file:

Blackboard Collaborate Admin Launcher

Solution 2:

Open the .collab files using Java.
If you do not have Java installed, you will want to go to and download the latest version before continuing with these steps. After downloading Java you will need to associate the file type with Java Web Start. The instruction below will assist with the association.
  • Click on Start  and select Control Panel.
  • In the top right corner of the Control Panel, select Category from the view by: pull down menu.
  • Click the Programs link.
  • Under Default Programs, click the Make a file type always open in a specific program link.
  • Under the Name column, locate and select .Collab from the list of Extensions.
  • Click the Change program button.
  • From the Open With window, click the Browse... button..
  • From the Open With... dialogue window, (This will typically open in the c:\Program Files directory)
  • Select the Java folder, (If you do not see Java, go back up one level to the c:\ drive and select Program Files(x86), then select the Java folder)
  • Double click the latest jre folder (example: jre7, jre1.8_25, etc)
  • Double click the bin folder
  • Double click the javaws application
  • Click the OK button.
  • Click the Close button.
The .Collab files will now open, by default, with Java Web Start.
