When Launching Collaborate with the Original Experience Sessions using the Windows Launcher 1.6.3 Process Fails

Issue Description:
Some users have reported that when they attempt to launch a Collaborate with the Original experience session or recording using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher application version 1.6.3 for Windows, the process fails.

Symptoms:

Known Issue Symptoms

When some users attempt to launch a Collaborate with the Original experience session or recording using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher application version 1.6.3 for Windows, the process will fail without presenting an error message. From the end-user perspective, the process seems to disappear without offering any useful information about the problem.

Affected Platforms

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10


Resolution/Workaround:

October 7, 2016:
This issue has been resolved in the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher 1.6.4 which is being released on Friday, October 7, 2016.  For more information please review KBA 000042861.

October 5, 2016:
For the time being, users can workaround the issue by launching their sessions and recordings with Java as follows:
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Select Default Programs or Programs > Default Programs, depending on your settings.
  3. Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  4. Select the entry for .collab from the list and click the Change program button.
  5. The Open with window will appear.
    • If there is a listing for Java(TM) Web Start Launcher in this window, select it and click OK, then proceed to step #10.
    • If there is no listing for Java(TM) Web Start Launcher in this window, proceed to step #6.
  6. Click the Browse button.
  7. Navigate to the Java directory on your computer. For most systems, this will be one of the following:
    • C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_101\bin
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_101\bin
    • *Note that the number following "jre" above will vary depending on your installed version of Java.
  8. Select javaws.exe and click the Open button.
  9. Click the OK button.
  10. Launch a Collaborate Classic session or recording.
