Important Notes

Blackboard Ally

Ally, an optional licensed service for improving content accessibility, can now be integrated into Learn and improves accessibility in the following ways:
  • Instructors can view an accessibility score and learn ways to improve the accessibility of materials.
  • Students can download automatically-generated alternative versions of uploaded files, such as accessible HTML, digital braille, and audio format files.
  • Administrators can view accessibility scores of materials across courses and track changes over time to plan, measure, and improve accessibility.

Highlights of New Features and Enhancements

Smaller, Faster Installer

This update removes redundant libraries and procedures to reduce installer size and improve speed. Installation times will vary by environment dependent upon size and hardware.

Faster Startup

The startup sequence and restart times of application subsystems have been improved.

Submission Receipts

Students can receive a notification email for each assignment attempt with information about the submission including attached files. Students can also access receipts at any time on the My Grades page in the submissions filter area. Administrators can optionally disable the email notifications.

Learn 2016 Theme Improvements and Mobile Optimization

  • The discussion board is responsive for mobile devices if the post contents are responsive. Discussion participants can read, respond, and use other discussion features such as post rating.
  • Pages with tables, course menu, and My Blackboard pages are better optimized for mobile devices. Contextual menus can be accessed on both tablet and mobile devices.

Additional Drag-and-Drop Locations

The drag-and-drop feature has been added to the Content Collection, Content Editor, Blank Page, Blogs, Journals, and Portfolios. If the browser allows, users can drag a folder of files and the files will upload individually.

Outcomes Assessment: Evidence Sampling by demographic

Assessment managers can sample student assignments by demographic information in the education level field or in institution roles. Sampling by institution roles allows Boolean AND/OR selection for enhanced search.

LTI Improvements

LTI course links created by partners’ and institutionally-created solutions through Building Block APIs can now leverage LTI Outcomes 1.0 for grade/score return.

Content Collection Improvements

The Content Collection has been improved to remove spam vulnerabilities and enhance search indexing performance. These improvements were also included in prior-version maintenance releases.

SIS Integration Changes

New REST web services have been added to retrieve job status and record processing errors. Administrators can implement real-time monitoring and issue resolution processes. Command-line snapshot tools have been removed. Flat, snapshot-formatted files can still be processed through the SIS Integration Framework.

Password Change Improvement

Changing passwords now requires users to enter their current password as well as enter their new password for greater security.  Administrators can update the label "Current Password" in Admin Panel > Customize User Information.

Blackboard Predict Support

Support for the additional, optional Blackboard Predict solution is included in this release. Predict uses longitudinal analysis of Learn and Student Information System data with predictive analytic algorithms to help educators, advisors, coaches and tutors to identify students at risk and intervene. If licensed and configured, Blackboard Learn administrators can enable the tools in the admin panel tools management area; the options will appear in all environments.

Email Settings

Starting in the Blackboard Learn 9.1 Q2 2017 release, administrators edit email configuration settings in the user interface, rather than editing the settings in the bb-config.properties file. This method also allows you to edit email configuration settings without having to restart your Blackboard Learn environment. The configuration settings are now located under System Configuration > Email Configuration.  The Local Support Contact, which was previously under System Admin > Help, is now located under Email Configuration as well.  For additional details on the settings, please see Email.

Clients who have control over their user's email addresses and not susceptible to DMARC-based rejections now have the option to turn off DMARC handling through System Configuration instead of the bb-config.properties file.

Deprecated Items

Red Hat Linux 5

Red Hat Linux 5 is no longer supported. Affected Linux environments should upgrade to Red Hat Linux 6 when adopting this release.

Command-Line Snapshot Tools

Blackboard announced in April 2016 the end of support and the removal of the Snapshot Tools, Article - #42089.  In the 9.1 Q2 2017 release, the command-line Snapshot tools have been removed. Flat, snapshot-formatted files can still be processed through the SIS Integration Framework.

If you need assistance with adopting the SIS Integration Framework, Blackboard offers mentoring services that can help you plan, scale, and upgrade your integrations.  Contact your Blackboard Sales Representative to schedule a time to discuss your recommended options and next steps.
