Description

Some Windows users have reported that attempting to application share in Collaborate with the Original Experience results in the following Java error:
Java(TM) Platform SE binary has stopped working

Most of the impacted users will find that their session becomes unresponsive for 1 - 2 minutes immediately after initiating the application sharing feature. The error above is presented to users directly following the moment of unresponsiveness, and clicking the Close program button will terminate Java and close the Web Conferencing session window on the local system.

Solution

Updating the driver for the display adapter as follows will resolve the issue on most impacted systems:

Windows 10

  1. Close any active Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing session or recording windows.
  2. Right-click the Windows Start button.
  3. Select Device Manager.
  4. Click the chevron beside the Display adapters category to expand the list of adapters.
  5. Right-click on the Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 adapter and choose Update Driver Software.
  6. Select the Search automatically for updated driver software option.
Windows will locate, download and install the updated driver software automatically; note that this process may take several minutes depending on the system. Windows will present a notification on-screen when the process is complete.
  • Verify that the driver has been updated by repeating steps 2 - 4 above, then right-click on the Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 adapter and select Properties.
  • Choose the Driver tab along the top of the Properties window.
  • Verify that the reported Driver Version is greater than 21.20.16.4534.
    • At the time this article was published, the updated version number was 21.20.16.4550.
  • At this time, users should launch a Collaborate Web Conferencing session and test the application sharing feature.

Workaround

If the solution above does not resolve the issue, users can work around the error by launching sessions with a system-installed version of Java Web Start rather than the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher application. Instructions to do so are listed below, but users are also encouraged to contact Collaborate support for further assistance.

Windows 7 / 8
  1. Right-click the Windows Start button.
  2. Select Run.
  3. Paste the following into the Open line: control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc
  4. Click the OK Button.
  5. This will start the Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  6. Select the entry for .collab from the list and click the Change program button.
  7. The Open with window will appear.
    • If there is a listing for Java(TM) Web Start Launcher in this window, select it and click OK, then proceed to step #10.
    • If there is no listing for Java(TM) Web Start Launcher in this window, proceed to step #6.
  8. Click the More Apps link.
  9. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click on the Look for another app on this PC link.
  10. Navigate to the Java directory on your computer. For most systems, this will be one of the following:
    • C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_111\bin
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_111\bin
    • *Note that the number following "jre" above will vary depending on your installed version of Java.
  11. Select javaws.exe and click the Open button.
  12. Click the OK button.
  13. Launch a Collaborate Web Conferencing session and test the application sharing feature.

Windows 10
  • Close any Collaborate session or recording windows.
  • Open the Windows Control Panel and go into Programs and Features.
  • Check the list of programs to ensure that Java is already installed on the system. If it isn't installed, please download and install Java from www.java.com before proceeding.
  • Download a new Collaborate meeting or recording file but don't launch the file yet.
  • Locate the meeting or recording .COLLAB file in your Downloads folder.
  • Right-click on the file and choose Open with then click Choose another app.
  • If you see Java (TM) Web Start Launcher in this list (you may need to click More apps to expand the list), select it and check the box that says Always use this app to open .collab files then click the OK button.
  • If Java (TM) Web Start Launcher is not in the list, check the box that says Always use this app to open .collab files then click Look for another app on this PC.
  • Navigate to the following location:
    • c:\program files\java\jreXXX\bin
    • XXX represents a number that will vary based on the version of Java installed on the computer, for example: jre1.8.0_221.
  • Select the file named javaws.exe and click Open.
  • Going forward, all .COLLAB files will open using Java Web Start rather than the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher application.
  • Launch a Collaborate session or recording to test the application sharing functionality.
