This article provides instructions on how to set file association to open the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.msi file properly. Files of type ".msi" should be opened by the Windows Installer. It is possible for this type of file to become associated with another application, causing them to not install correctly. Consequently, users cannot launch web conferencing sessions successfully using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.

Windows Vista and higher

Solution

To set file association to open the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.msi file properly, follow the steps below:

Windows Vista/7

  1. Click on Start  and select Control Panel.
  2. In the top right corner of the Control Panel, select Category from the view by: pull down menu.
  3. Click the Programs link.
  4. Under Default Programs, click the Make a file type always open in a specific program link.
  5. Under the Name column, locate and select MSI from the list of Extensions.
  6. Click the Change program button.
  7. From the Open With window, click the Browse... button..
  8. From the Open With... dialogue window, navigate to C:\Windows\sys32
  9. Double click the Windows Installer application (msiexec.exe)
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. Click the Close button.

Windows 8

  1. Open Default Programs by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Default programs in the search box, tapping or clicking Apps, and then tapping or clicking Default Programs.
  2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. Locate .MSI under the list of registered file types. Highlight the entry by tapping or clicking .MSI under the Extensions column, then tap or click on Change Program.
  4. Tap or click Windows Installer from the list of programs.
  5. If you do not see Windows Installer listed, tap or click More options then Look for another app on this PC.
  6. Tap or double-click on Local Disk (C:) in the left column (located under “Computer”).
  7. Tap or double-click the System32 folder.
  8. Locate and select msiexec and press Open.

Windows 10

  1. Download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher application installer file at the link below:

  2. Locate the .MSI file in your Downloads folder.

  3. Right-click on the file and choose Open with then click Choose another app.

  4. If you see Windows Installer in this list (you may need to click More apps to expand the list), select it and check the box that says Always use this app to open .msi files then click the OK button.

  5. If Windows Installer is not in the list, check the box that says Always use this app to open .collab files then click Look for another app on this PC.

  6. Navigate to the following location:

    • c:\windows\system32

  7. Select the file named msiexec.exe and click Open.
