Updated Bulletin (Published July 23, 2020):

Important update

While working on the deployment of Bb Annotate for all regions, we have encountered an issue that could affect the experience of our users in Singapore data center, South Korea data center and the Polymall region. We’ve seen that some documents could not be seen within the Bb Annotate tool due to some characteristics in the usernames. So, looking for the better experience for our clients we’ve decided to shift the production migration dates for these data centers to the week of August 10th. Time by which we may have fixed the issue. Test/stage migration dates remain the same for South Korea data center, however the dates for Polymall region have been slightly moved by one week. Polymall test/stage migration will be conducted the week of July 27th. For more detail please look at the main table. We are sorry for any inconvenience this change might bring to you and your institution, however we firmly believe this issue needs to be addressed so it won’t impact your exams period. If you have any doubt, please feel free to reach out to us.

These dates are approximate.

Updated Bulletin (Published June 25, 2020):

Important Update

Providing a high-quality experience to our clients is truly important for us here at Blackboard. To that end, the deployment schedule has been changed to address an issue that was discovered, where comments could be displayed incorrectly to instructors grading with Bb Annotate. Although the likelihood of this issue happening in incredibly rare, we chose to immediately address it.

Migrations originally schedule between June 22nd and July 3rd have been slightly delayed. Activation of Bb Annotate is now planned to restart on Thursday July 2nd after the discovered issue has been addressed. We apologize for any inconvenience this change could bring to our Self hosted and Managed hosted clients based in the United States, as well as our SaaS, Manage hosted and self-hosted clients in Europe. Providing you the best experience in the shortest time possible is the top priority for us.

Over the next few months, Blackboard Learn will be replacing the New Box View integration with a new tool called Bb Annotate for Inline Assignment Grading in both Original and Ultra Course Views.  Bb Annotate will offer a more robust feature set to provide customizable feedback to learners, which includes a sidebar summary view, freehand drawing tools, various color selections, and much more.  We will begin moving clients over to Bb Annotate starting on the designated days listed in the below schedule. The migration process could take several hours to days depending on the number of files that need to be migrated from New Box View to Bb Annotate.  The release will be staggered by Regional Data Centers, U.S. time zones, and U.S. Deployment Type (SaaS, Managed Hosting, Self-Hosted).  The Regional Cloud setting for your environment will indicate where you are aligned in the release schedule.  The migration to Bb Annotate will be automatic and Administrators will not be required to adjust any settings to enable Bb Annotate.  If a user is actively annotating using New Box View, the migration for the file will be delayed until after the user completes that marking session.  Clients who wish to postpone updating their environments during the scheduled roll-out will have the option to opt-in to the delayed migration dates.

We’ve heard our update created confusion, so to add clarity, we added date ranges to our release schedule. Bb Annotate’s release is complex. As we’ve learned more, we decided to shift Singapore’s, South Korea’s and our Opt-In Delayed Migration Test/Stage release date to ensure release quality.

These dates are approximate.

Opt-In Delayed Migration
Clients will need to create a Support case requesting the Production release in August. Please submit the case at least 7 days before your scheduled Test/Stage update.  In the Support case, include your Cloud Connector Site ID and URLs for your test, stage and production environments.  The Site ID can be found under the Administrator Panel > Cloud Connector > Cloud Connection Settings page.  Please also reference OPS-80095 and OPS-80096 in your ticket.

Self- and Managed Hosting clients
  • Self-hosted clients will need to provide their Cloud Connector Site ID through a Support case to update their test and staging sites to Bb Annotate.  Please submit the case at least 7 days before your scheduled Test/Stage update. In the Support case, please include your Cloud Connector Site ID and URL for each test and stage site. The Site ID can be found under the Administrator Panel > Cloud Connector > Cloud Connection Settings page. Please also reference OPS-81355 in your ticket.
  • Clients who don’t have a Regional Cloud setting selected before the migration to Bb Annotate will have files annotated using New Box View migrated to the U.S. Data Center (us-east-1).  If you choose to update this setting after the migration to Bb Annotate, the files will be moved to the selected Data Center.  Please contact Blackboard Client Support if you have any questions before making a selection.
  • It was previously communicated that clients will need to be on a particular Cumulative Update (Q2 2019 CU3, Q4 2018 CU7, Q2 2018 CU13) or newer major release for 9.1 by September 2020 to continue using Bb Annotate.  The Cumulative Update requirement has been lifted, which means any client currently using New Box View with annotations enabled will be able to continue using Bb Annotate once we officially turn off the integration with Box. An additional service is being built by our Product Development team to allow Bb Annotate to continue to work on previous releases.  This includes clients on Q2 2016 CU6, Q4 2016 CU4, Q2 2017 CU4, and Q4 2017 where we initially released New Box View.  Additionally, clients on earlier Cumulative Updates for Q2 2019, Q4 2018, and Q2 2018 are included as well.  Even though the tool will be available for older versions of Learn, the Blackboard Learn Client Support Services Guide covers the level of service for the release.
